QMU Filmmaker’s Role in the Launch of The Kelpies

Walid Salhab, a lecturer in media practice lecturer at QMU who is also an award-winning filmmaker, created a unique stop-motion/time-lapse film of The Kelpies documenting the full construction phase of the giant equine themed monument in Falkirk. Using his dynamic style of stop-motion filming, Walid filmed the project over a seven-month period, tracking construction through to completion.

Over 60 days of filming, Walid captured 120,000 individual images to create his seven-minute masterpiece. He was the only person in the world to be granted full access to the complete build phase of The Kelpies, which was created by Scottish sculptor, Andy Scott. Walid’s unique stop-motion film was used to launch The Kelpies in Scotland and New York in 2013. Following the initial launch of The Kelpies in 2013, Andy Scott’s smaller sculptures of The Kelpies – The Kelpie Maquettes – took pride of place in University Square for a three-month period.
