Veronica's decision to pursue her studies at QMU was driven by the university's reputation for its quality of teaching and high employability rates. She enrolled in the MSc International Management and Leadership course drawn by its strategic focus and practical insights into global business dynamics. The chance to live in the beautiful city of Edinburgh further her choice!

In this Student Story, Veronica highlights her enriching experiences, from engaging with a diverse student body to participating in rewarding extracurricular activities like the Peer Assisted Learning Scheme. She attributes her academic success to the robust support from QMU's staff and services, and she looks forward to a dynamic career in international management and leadership post-graduation!

Why did you choose to study at Queen Margaret University? 

I chose to study at QMU because it is renowned for its high-quality teaching and specialised programs. Also, because the University focuses on developing employability skills, which prepare students for successful careers. 

What interested you about your chosen course? 

I was interested in the 'International Management and Leadership' course due to its focus on developing strategic leadership skills and global business acumen. The course offers practical insights into managing cross-cultural teams, navigating international markets, and making informed decisions in a global context, which are essential for a successful career in today's interconnected world. 

What attracted you to study in Edinburgh? 

To start with, I have always loved Scotland. But I was attracted to study in Edinburgh because of the beautiful architecture and inspiring environment, which I believe is conducive environment for studying. Moreso, Edinburgh is known for its high quality of life, with excellent public services, transportation, and a safe, welcoming atmosphere for students. 

Did you attend an Open Day/Offer Holder Day? If so, what was your experience like? 

Yes, I attended QMU Open Day/Offer Holders Day Online. It was an insightful and engaging experience. I had the opportunity to take a virtual tour of the campus, which showcased the modern facilities and vibrant student community. The session with faculty members (Marc Robertson and Richard Bent) was informative, provided a clear understanding of the course structure and expectations. Likewise, the session with the Students' Union gave me a real sense of the supportive and inclusive environment at QMU. That day confirmed my decision to study here, as it highlighted both the academic excellence and the welcoming community of the university. 

What have you most enjoyed about your course? What has been the highlight? 

I have thoroughly enjoyed the comprehensive and dynamic nature of my course. The curriculum's blend of theoretical knowledge and practical applications has been particularly enriching, allowing me to apply classroom concepts to real-world scenarios. The interactive lectures have enhanced my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. 

"The highlight of my experience has been the group seminars/projects, which provided an invaluable opportunity to collaborate with peers from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds. This not only improved my teamwork and communication skills but also gave me a global perspective on management and leadership practices."

Also, the module called ā€œCritical Issues in International Managementā€ provided invaluable insights into cultural relativism, cultural intelligence, contemporary management issues and leadership strategies, making the course both engaging and highly relevant to my career aspirations. Additionally, the guest lectures from industry leaders were fantastic and eye-opening. 

Have you participated in a course activity you found especially interesting? 

I have participated in several course activities that I found especially interesting, particularly the group presentation and my dissertation. The group presentation was a highly engaging experience. Collaborating with classmates allowed me to gain different perspectives and develop strong teamwork skills. The presentations enhanced my understanding of international management practices, and improved my public speaking and presentation abilities. My dissertation has been another activity I found interesting. Undertaking independent research on a topic of my choice within the realm of international management and leadership has been intellectually stimulating. This project has enabled me to delve deeply into a specific area, apply critical thinking, and contribute original insights to the field. The process of searching for literature, writing, collecting, analysing and presenting data has significantly enhanced my analytical and academic skills, marking it as a cornerstone of my academic journey. 

How have your lecturers supported your learning? 

My lecturers have been exceptionally supportive so far. They have consistently provided clear and comprehensive explanations of complex concepts, making the material accessible and engaging. The drop-in sessions have been particularly helpful, allowing me to seek clarification and deeper understanding on challenging topics. Also, the variety of teaching methods, including interactive lectures, group discussions/seminars, which have catered to different learning styles enhanced my overall learning experience.

Furthermore, their encouragement to participate in events has enriched my learning beyond the classroom, providing practical insights and professional development opportunities.Ā "

What have been some of your challenges with the course and university life? How have you overcome them? 

One of the main challenges I faced with my course was balancing the demanding academic workload with extracurricular activities and personal commitments. To overcome this, I developed strong time management skills, prioritising tasks and creating a detailed schedule to ensure I met all deadlines without compromising on quality. Additionally, utilising university resources, such as academic support services, helped me stay on track and manage my workload effectively. 

Another challenge was adapting to the multicultural environment and diverse perspectives within the classroom. While initially daunting, this challenge became an opportunity for growth. I actively engaged in group discussions and collaborative projects, which improved my cultural competence and communication skills. Seeking feedback from peers and lecturers further helped me understand different viewpoints and enriched my learning experience. 

"Lastly, adjusting to a new city and university life after long educational break posed its own set of challenges, such as homesickness and navigating a new social environment. I overcame this by participating in university events. Taking advantage of student support services, including counselling and wellness programs, all played a crucial role in ensuring my wellbeing and successful adaptation to university life."

 

 Do you have any advice for students who might be interested in applying for this course?

Students who might be interested in applying for this course should ensure that they: 

  1. Engage with peers from various backgrounds for invaluable learning experiences.
  2. Develop strong time management skills to handle the demanding workload.
  3. Attend lectures and participate fully in class activities and group projects to develop essential skills.
  4. Utilise university resources like academic support services and the library.

  7. Regularly seek feedback to improve your academic performance and personal development.
  8. Join extracurricular activities and student societies related to your field for practical experience. 

Have you been a part of any extracurricular programmes during your time as a student at QMU? If so, how has it helped you develop skills and experience? 

I have been a part of Peer Assisted Learning Scheme (PALs) at QMU, serving as a PALs leader. This experience has significantly contributed to my personal and professional development. As a PALs leader, I facilitated study sessions for fellow masterā€™s students, helping them to understand course material and develop effective study strategies. This role enhanced my leadership and communication skills as I had to explain complex concepts clearly and manage group dynamics effectively. Also, it improved my organisational abilities, as I had to plan and structure the sessions to meet the diverse needs of the students. Being a PALs leader also fostered my empathy and mentoring skills. Supporting new students, seeing them progress and gain confidence in their studies was incredibly rewarding. This experience has been key in building my confidence and reinforcing my understanding of the course content, further benefiting my own academic performance. 

Overall, my involvement in the PALs program has equipped me with essential skills such as leadership, communication, organisation, coaching and mentoring, all of which are highly transferable to my future career in international management and leadership. 

What QMU student services have you used to support you through your university journey and how have they helped you?  

I have used the Effective Learning Service (ELS) at QMU severally. The ELS has been instrumental in enhancing my academic journey. It improved my academic writing, study techniques, and exam preparation through workshops and one-on-one sessions. ELS also taught me effective feedback utilisation, significantly boosting my academic performance and confidence. The Effective Learning Service has equipped me with essential academic skills and strategies that have been pivotal in my success at QMU. 

Whatā€™s your ā€˜top tipā€™ for making the most of being a student? 

My top tip for making the most of being a student is to actively engage in both academic and extracurricular activities. Take advantage of all the resources and opportunities your university offers, such as joining student societies, participating in workshops, and utilising academic support services. Building a balanced schedule that includes time for studying, socialising, and personal interests will enrich your university experience, enhance your skills, and create lasting memories. Engaging with your peers, networking with professionals, and seeking out diverse experiences will not only contribute to your personal growth but also prepare you for future career opportunities. 

What has been the most valuable lesson that youā€™ve learned at university? 

The most valuable lesson I've learned at university is the importance of resilience and adaptability. Throughout my academic journey, I've encountered challenges and setbacks that required me to persevere and find creative solutions. Whether it was overcoming academic hurdles, managing multiple responsibilities, or navigating new social environments, university has taught me to remain resilient in the face of adversity and adaptable to changing circumstances. 

This lesson has been instrumental in my personal and professional development, as it has equipped me with the mindset and skills necessary to thrive in a dynamic and competitive world. It has taught me the significance of continuous learning, flexibility, and maintaining a positive attitude even in challenging situations. Overall, this lesson has not only shaped my university experience but has also prepared me for the complexities of life beyond academia. 

Did you receive any award during your time at QMU? How did you feel when you received it and how do you think it has helped you? 

Receiving the PALS Principal's Award for providing outstanding support through the Peer Assisted Learning Scheme was incredibly gratifying and humbling. It validated the effort and dedication I invested in assisting fellow students and contributing to their academic success. Knowing that my contributions were recognised at such a level filled me with a sense of pride and accomplishment. It also reinforced my belief in the value of peer support and mentoring within the university community. 

Moreover, receiving this award motivated me to continue making a positive impact and encouraged me to further develop my leadership and mentoring skills. It was a significant affirmation of my efforts and served as a reminder of the importance of contributing positively to the academic journey of others. Overall, receiving the PALS Principal's Award was a memorable and rewarding experience that inspired me to strive for excellence in all aspects of my academic and personal endeavours. 

What are you plans after graduation? 

After graduation, my ambition is to pursue a career in international management and leadership, leveraging the skills and knowledge gained from my studies at QMU. I am particularly interested in roles that allow me to work in diverse cultural settings, managing and leading teams across borders. 

In the nearest future, I envision myself in a senior management position within a multinational corporation or an international organisation. I aim to contribute strategically to the organisation's growth and expansion into global markets, utilising my expertise in cross-cultural management, strategic planning, and leadership. 

Also, I am committed to continuous learning and professional development, possibly pursuing my PhD soon or certifications in specific management disciplines. Ultimately, I aspire to make a positive impact in the global business community, driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and promoting sustainable practices in the organisations I work with. 

In general, my goal is to build a fulfilling career that aligns with my passion for international business and leadership, while also making meaningful contributions to the global economy and society as a whole.
